About the Position
The Climate Resilience and Disaster Response Research and Project Coordinator will be the lead organizer on a series of public events, workshops and speakers series responding to climate change, and building resilience in the North. They will work closely with Dechinta faculty and staff to ensure innovative and community driven content and delivery. This position is required to have significant experience with event design, coordination and community engagement. Emphasizing Indigenous healing practices, this role will be responsible for collaborating with partners to co-develop relevant and most impactful programming opportunities over the next 6 months.
About Dechinta
Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning is an Indigenous-led land-based teaching and education institution that operates out of Yellowknife, NWT. Since 2010, Dechinta has been providing university accredited programming in partnership with the University of Alberta and University of British Columbia.
Location of position is flexible but priority may be given to those who are currently located, connected to, or willing to relocate to Yellowknife or another northern community.
Core Duties
Collaborate with other faculty and staff to develop innovative, ground breaking and decolonizing programming that responds to current contexts of climate change, and fosters community resilience grounded in Dene Knowledge and lead by Dene Knowledge Holders.
Develop, nurture and maintain relationships with Elders, Knowledge Holders, language speakers, land based practitioners, moose hide tanners, hunters, artists and storytellers.
Event planning, including advertisement and promotions, outreach and engagement with speakers, collaborative workshop design and delivery.
Assist with land-based programing administration
Implement budgets related to programming area
Provide input required for Dechinta’s annual reporting
Position Requirements

Strong presentation, communication, and public speaking skills
Strong program planning, implementation, problem-solving, and evaluation skills
Strong organization skills and attention to detail, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to a changing work environment
Ability to work in a small, fast-paced, and unpredictable environment
Ability to work a flexible schedule, as some duties require evenings and weekend hours
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills and demonstrated attention to detail.
Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills and written communication skills.
Experience working with Indigenous knowledge keepers and Elders
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and committed team member with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of northern Canada.
Working Conditions
This is a family friendly work environment. Staff are encouraged to include their families in programming whenever appropriate. We support flexible working arrangements, including staff working from home when required.
Working conditions can be physically and mentally challenging including long days and working in difficult conditions including wind, snow and ice. Position may be required to lift heavy objects and may come under mental stress and strain.
This position is expected to work at a minimum of .5 FTE and up to full time (negotiable).
This position is grant funded.
