Summer Youth Apprentice | Full-Time (temporary summer position)
Location: Dechinta Office, Kam Lake Yellowknife
Rate: $29/hr
Dates: Two (2) positions are available for May 5th 2025-August 29th 2025. Two (2) positions are available July 7th – August 29th 2025. An alternative start or end date can be requested. The hours of the job are 9am-4pm, Monday- Friday, based out of our office in Kam Lake, Yellowknife. The Apprentice is responsible for their own transportation to and from work daily, please let us know if this is a barrier for you.
The Summer Youth Apprentice Program is designed for youth to gain skills to be competent on the land, learn traditional knowledge from Elders, build critical thinking and problem solving skills, and understand how to implement intergenerational and land-based learning projects.
Your primary responsibility as an apprentice is to learn. Elders have lots to teach and need eager, ready to learn youth to pass the teachings on to. You are expected to be present and engaged, helping, and learning through doing. Through the practice of land-based skill building you will develop critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and project management skills. You will be expected to do physical labour, such as but not limited to, hauling and chopping firewood, pulling nets, scraping hides, and in general assisting elders with lifting and carrying things. Approximately 80% of your time will be spent doing physical work and being on the land, the other 20% of your time will be in an office setting. This will include Wilderness First Aid training; an Indigenous languages program; project coordination; and lectures from Dr. Glen Coulthard on the political importance of Dene land-based learning. The position is somewhat flexible based on the interests of the Apprentice.
