Led by Francois Paulette, this course provides a foundation in Dene Chanie – The Path That We Walk, a values-based, holistic approach to leadership as service to your community and people
Traditional Leadership is Value–based leadership brought down from generation to generation. It is in families and blood, it is inherited, it based on values, principles and your culture, identify and history. It is rooted in your relationship with your family and the land.
Traditional Leadership is rooted in The Path – Dene Chanie – That Path That We Walk. The knowledge of Dene Chanie goes back before Columbus and provides a foundation where leaders know where they come from. Herein, Leadership is values based. There is not just one leader, but many leaders, which have purpose and functions. There are important leadership roles for both men and women. This teaching draws on the Matriarchy system and the role this played in the everyday lives of family, community and Nation. This values-based leadership approach where leaders are protectors and providers, and led by principles and values based on their culture will enhance your ability to lead with purpose and results.
Upon completing this training, students will have a deeper awareness of their own personal identity and history. With this knowledge, they will be equipped to begin to rediscover and redefine their path as leaders, as family members and in their community. They will begin to work with Elders that have knowledge of their traditional leaders and how they can use these teachings to become a better leader. Weather you are a Chief, Council Member or someone who is profiled in the community as a community leader, this course is a foundation for your leadership skills. Participants will also go forth with a stronger grounding to become better family people and make stronger communities.
Participants will be led through the historical teachings of leadership pre-contact, followed by the impacts of colonization including key legal and political acts, such as the Doctrine of Discovery, the Indian Act, Residential Schools and their influence and impact on communities, Dene political organization and resistance through the Berger Inquiry, The creation of the Dene Nation and Land Claims. This historical understanding of how leadership changed will contextualize possibilities and methods forward. Through workshops, the group will explore situations and how traditional leadership can apply, including instruments such as constitutions, from community-Nation, building stronger families and how we can introduce better relationships to work with Western people.
Through a holistic approach including ceremony, personal sanctuary, group work and feast, this process will provide participants with a foundation for leadership applicable to all aspects of life. This course is open to anyone who wants to develop balanced leadership skills to serve their community.
